After a disappointing loss to in-state rival Michigan State last Sunday, Michigan had to stew in the defeat for three days. The fourth day saw a matchup with Nebraska, which served as cannon fodder for the Wolverines in an 83-52 beatdown on Senior Night.Center Jon Teske had a huge night for Michigan, scoring 22 points on 7-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. The win helped the Wolverines improve to 14-4 in conference play, leaving them trailing both the Spartans and Purdue by a half game.Michigan hits the road to take on a solid Maryland team that entered the week ranked No. 17 in the AP poll. Maryland has been a consistent force in the middle of the Big Ten, but they do have some strange losses on their resume.

One of those came on Wednesday when they went to Penn State and lost by 17. The Terrapins were done in by anemic 3-point shooting (Maryland went just 2-19 from beyond the arc) while letting the Nittany Lions shoot 45.8 percent from the floor.

Penn State entered the game with an 11-16 record, including a pathetic 4-12 in the Big Ten. This loss, along with a strange neutral floor loss to Illinois at Madison Square Garden, won’t kill the Terrapins’ chances of making the NCAA Tournament but it could severely damage their seeding. These two teams last met on Feb. 16, with Michigan walking away with a 65-52 victory in Ann Arbor. Charles Matthews led a balanced Michigan attack that day with 14 points and seven rebounds.Ninth-ranked Ohio State went to overtime to avoid one of the most stunning upsets in this college football season, defeating Maryland 52-51 Saturday when the Terrapins failed to convert a 2-point conversion after the potential game-tying touchdown.

Favored by 141/2 points, Ohio State (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten, No. 10 CFP) trailed by two touchdowns in the third quarter and 45-38 with under two minutes left before rallying to a pivotal victory.

After a 5-yard touchdown run by Dwayne Haskins gave the Buckeyes the lead to start overtime, Tayon Fleet-Davis scored to get the Terrapins within a point. Interim coach Matt Canada decided to end it right there, going for 2, but Tyrrell Pigrome’s pass to Jeshaun Jones was off target. The victory kept the Buckeyes in the hunt for the Big Ten title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Ohio State concludes the regular season next week in a game against Michigan that will decide the Big Ten East winner.

The Buckeyes never led until overtime against the upstart Terrapins (5-6, 3-5). Haskins ran for three touchdowns and was 28 for 38 for 405 yards and three TDs.

Ohio State finished with a whopping 688 yards, including 203 on the ground by J.K. Dobbins, but the defense allowed 535 yards and seven touchdowns.

Maryland freshman Anthony McFarland had touchdown runs of 81 and 75 yards in the first quarter and finished with 298 yards rushing — seven short of the school’s single-game record.

The Terps took a 45-38 lead when Chigoziem Okonkwo recovered a fumble by McFarland in the end zone with 1:41 left. Haskins then orchestrated a 50-yard, beat-the-clock drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Binjimen Victory with 40 seconds remaining.

Up 24-17 at halftime, the Terrapins garnered further momentum on Ohio State’s first drive of the second half when RaVon Davis picked off a deflected pass and took it 37 yards for a score. The Buckeyes answered with a 73-yard scoring drive that featured a pair of penalties against Maryland, including a pass interference call on a third-and-7. After Ohio State pulled even in the fourth quarter, Maryland moved back in front on a 27-yard touchdown pass by Pigrome, who was making his first start of the season after Kasim Hill sustained a season-ending knee injury last week.

Pigrome went 6 for 13 for 181 yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ohio State: It goes without saying that the Buckeyes must play much, much better next week to beat Michigan. The offense had no trouble moving the ball, but three turnovers proved costly. The defense, needless to say, was awful against a one-dimensional team that repeatedly peeled off huge runs.

Maryland: Despite putting forth a great effort against a Top-10 team on Senior Day, the Terrapins still can’t seem to get the offense and defense working in sync. Last week, four turnovers were too much to overcome in a loss to Indiana. In this game, the defense couldn’t back a strong outing by a big-play offense that gave the Buckeyes headaches all afternoon.

PERFECT NO MORE

The Terrapins had scored on all 25 trips to the red zone this season, and Maryland freshman Joseph Petrino was the only kicker in the nation without a miss on a field-goal try (10 for 10) before both streaks ended in the second quarter. After reaching the Ohio State 18, the Terrapins lost ground before Petrino misfired on a 49-yard attempt.

Friday night will be a packed house at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium for Penn State football’s matchup against the Terps.
We’re now just a couple of days away from seeing Penn State football return to the gridiron. After playing for three consecutive weeks, the Nittany Lions caught themselves an early break for the bye week and had some extra time off while preparing for this week’s matchup.

Under the Friday night lights, Penn State will take on Maryland Football at their stadium, Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. This marks the first road game for the Nittany Lions as they hosted Idaho, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh at home for their first few matchups.

For quite some time now, Maryland has been anticipating the Week 5 battle against their Big Ten rivals. In order to help contribute to their attendance, Maryland announced that they would be canceling later classes on Friday in hopes making sure that all Terps fans come and represent for their ‘blackout.’ Well, it sounds like the outcome has been promising for them so far.
As of Wednesday morning, Maryland football’s official Twitter account made the announcement stating that Friday night’s game is officially a sell-out. So 54,000 fans are expected to be in attendance for the Big Ten’s big matchup this week.

Although Maryland is trying to win with the crowd, Penn State still remains a favorite in this one. As the Terps took a loss to Temple last week, the Nittany Lions are coming into College Park with an undefeated record and tons of momentum.
While they won’t take their rival opponent easy, the Nittany Lions are undoubtedly looking to make a statement with their first battle within the Big Ten for the year. After all, they are one of the conference’s best. Now, they have to prove it with a big win under the lights. It’s time for Sean Clifford and company to make a statement on the road.
Although no announcements have made about what networks will feature the remaining Penn State games this season, this change could be a problem moving forward, given the strong ties between FOX and the Big Ten. Two of the Nittany Lions’ first three games this year have aired on a FOX-owned channel, while 21 of their last 43 games during the last four seasons have done so.

For the time being, subscribers can use an antenna to watch games that air on FOX’s flagship station, but not for those on subsidiaries like FS1 and BTN, so they’ll need to find a bar or friend to watch.

In statements obtained by Sports Business Journal reporter John Ourand, both sides took to blaming each other for the dispute, in hopes of triggering an uproar from their shared customers.

“Dish/Sling elected to drop Fox networks in an effort to coerce us to agree to outrageous demands,” FOX said in a statement. “While we regret this is DISH/Sling’s preferred approach to negotiating, we remind our loyal viewers that the Fox services are widely available through every other major television provider.”

“It’s clear that Fox cares more about padding its bottom line than serving its viewers,” Dish said in a statement. “To add insult to injury, Fox pulled its channels right as viewers head into the heart of the NFL and college football season. We ask Fox to stop punishing its own viewers so we can focus on reaching a fair deal.”
Among returning Big Ten receivers who were named (consensus) honorable mention or better on last year’s all-conference teams, no player is receiving fewer offensive touches per game this season than Hamler.

He is the Nittany Lions’ most electrifying offensive threat. But that hasn’t seemed to matter up to this point. He has just 11 offensive touches through three games — 3.67 offensive touches per game — which is fewer per game than Purdue’s Rondale Moore (9.3), Minnesota’s Tyler Johnson (6.0), Nebraska’s J.D. Spielman (4.75), and Ohio State’s K.J. Hill (3.75).
“We’ve got to get him more touches with the ball in his hand,” James Franklin said Tuesday.

It’ll be interesting to see if that comes to fruition against Maryland. WR coach Gerad Parker said, ahead of the Buffalo game, that the staff has “got to find multiple ways” to get the ball in Hamler’s hands. Then Hamler had three offensive touches against the Bulls. Franklin said after that game that Hamler needs the ball more — and then in the next game, against Pitt, Hamler again had three offensive touches.

Get ready for a Pac-12 battle as Arizona State and California will face off at 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday at California Memorial Stadium. Coming off of a loss in a game they were expected to win, Arizona State now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.

The point spread favored the Sun Devils last week, but luck did not. It was a hard-fought game, but they had to settle for a 34-31 defeat against Colorado. Jayden Daniels and Brandon Aiyuk were two go-getters for the Sun Devils despite the loss. The former passed for 345 yards and two touchdowns, while the latter caught nine passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. Near the top of the highlight reel was Jayden Daniels’ 53-yard TD bomb to WR Brandon Aiyuk in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, California won the last time they faced Ole Miss, and things went their way last week, too. California walked away with a 28-20 victory. The win was familiar territory for them, who now has four in a row.

California’s win lifted them to 4-0 while Arizona State’s loss dropped them down to 3-1. A pair of defensive stats to keep an eye on: California enters the matchup with only 2 passing touchdowns allowed, good for sixth best in the nation. As for Arizona State, they come into the contest boasting the 10th fewest rushing touchdowns allowed in the league at 2. We’ll find out if either of these strengths ends up making the difference in the matchup.Arizona State vs. California on Friday night had the potential to be a huge showdown for the conference before ASU was upset at home against Colorado last week.

Who will win the Pac-12 Week 5 contest?eff Metcalfe writes: “The defensive stats suggest a low scoring game like Michigan State with either team capable of winning. Giving an edge to the Bears because of home field and ASU recent lack of success at Cal.”

Emily Horos writes: “Both of these teams beat the odds by pulling off upsets on the road this season (ASU over Michigan State; Cal over Mississippi). This week, ASU should do it a second time. The Sun Devils need to do better on defense to make that happen and Danny Gonzales will be a motivating force this week.”

Michelle Gardner writes: “This will be a very tough game, particularly on the road. ASU defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales took last week’s poor showing by the defense personally and I have a feeling he is going to have his guys ready. Jayden Daniels is getting better every game and the offensive line made a lot of progress last week. Just have a hunch the Sun Devils will find a way.”

Greg Moore writes: “Easiest prediction of the year (for a guy who doesn’t gamble.) The only thing ASU’s defense struggles with is getting to the quarterback. Cal’s offense gives up sacks like expensive coffee shops give up pumpkin spice. And ASU’s offense finally has some confidence. If the Bears get too aggressive, Jayden Daniels, Brandon Aiyuk and Frank Darby are gonna tear them up downfield. I said ASU would be 4-1 through five games, and I’m standing by it.”

The Arizona Republic: ASU 23, Cal 20
Kent Somers writes: “We’re only a month into the season and there is one undefeated team in the Pac-12, Cal. The Golden Bears have done it with defense, but are they worthy of being ranked 15th? Maybe. But I don’t think they will be after Friday night. I’m playing a hunch that ASU wins.”

WNo team in the country moves the ball as effectively on the ground as Navy. Running a triple-option has proven tough to defend. Navy’s quarterback, Malcolm Perry, can run and pass well, throwing for 151 yards in their recent win over East Carolina along with 156 rushing yards.Another option out of the backfield is fullback Nelson Smith. Tough to tackle, Smith rushed for 53 yards against ECU and 92 yards in the season opener against Holy Cross. He hasn’t gotten a ton of touches in his career so far, but averages 5.0 yards carry and has already tied his career-high in touchdowns this year.

Navy’s defense has held up strong as well, limiting opponents to 226 yards per game. Part of that has been successful on third downs, holding opponents to just a 53 percent conversion rate on the year — 10th in FBS.

Equally, as impressive on defense, the Tigers are third in FBS in total defense also allowing only 226 yards per game this season. They have allowed the fewest passing yards per game (110) and opponents are just a combined 26 for 64 passing against the Tigers.

Memphis has a pair of running backs, Kenneth Gainwell and Kylan Watkins, who are capable of eating up yardage with ease. Gainwell rushed for 145 yards in Memphis victory over South Alabama two weeks ago. Watkins was even more effective with 113 yards on just 11 carries.Going against a Navy team that allows just 74 rushing yards per game, passing might be the key for Memphis. Fortunately, quarterback Brady White can sling it and has thrown five touchdown passes to just two interceptions this year.eek 5 of the college football season kicks off on Thursday in grand style down south. The Navy Midshipmen, who have started the season with two blowout wins, are coming off a bye week and will take on fellow unbeaten Memphis on the road.

The Tigers stepped onto the scene with a bang this year, taking a 15-10 win over Ole Miss followed by two wins over FCS opposition. Also coming off a bye week, Memphis will have its hands full against a talented, physical Navy team that likes to wear down its opposition with a run-heavy style on offense.

It’s a battle between one of the nation’s top defensive teams and the FBS leader in total rushing offense.
